4.7-magnitude quake hits W Papua

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SORONG -- An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale hit Tambrauw district, West Papua province, on Wednesday night.

The epicenter of the quake which struck at 07.04 p.m. local time was located 68 kilometers northeast of the district at a depth of 54 kilometers, Head of the Sorong Geophysics Station Andri W Bidang said.

Judging by its hypocenter depth, the quake was shallow one caused by the collision of plates, he said.

The quake was felt by almost all residents of Tambrauw district, particularly those staying at storey buildings.

The tremor was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami.
