Indonesia to establish REDD+ in December

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesia would establish an institution for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) in December, said the Head of REDD+ Task Force, Kuntoro Mangkusubroto. The institution covers important elements, such as coordination and implementation and also financing issue.

"We are waiting for Presidential Decree," Mangkusubroto said on Tuesday. 

Norwegian Minister of Environment Bård Vegar Solhjell said that he was impressed with the work of REDD+ Task Force. He said that Norway would increase REDD+ cooperation to higher level. 'This cooperation is important for both countries and the world," he said.

As a developing country with more than 130 million hectares of forest, Indonesia has great possibility to implement REDD+. REDD is an effort to create a financial value for the carbon stored in forests, offering incentives for developing countries to reduce emissions from forested lands and invest in low-carbon paths to sustainable development.
