Indonesia-US cooperate to preserve biodiversity

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, CIBINONG - Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and National Science Foundation (NSF) held a discussion on biodiversity in Indonesia and develop the proper technology for research, Monday.

Chairman of LIPI, Lukman Hakim, said Indonesian biodiversity in forest, lake, mountains and small islands was threatened and needed significant attention. "Our biodiversity is threatened by gold, tin and coal minings, hotel building, and even plantation," Hakim said on Monday.

While biodiversity reservation in unique ecosystem is challenging, LIPI and NSF joint research is expected to unveil genetic richness in Indonesia. This workshop LIPI-NSF on Biodiversity is a chain of events held by Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) with sub theme biodiversity and marine biology between Indonesia and US in 2012. 

The Head of Biotechnology Research at LIPI, Witjaksono, said the cooperation would build real framework for the future joint research and help increasing the quality of research and capacity of the researchers.
