REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MAKASSAR -- South Sulawesi province will receive Rp30 billion in funds from the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry in 2016 for the development of its seaweed industry.

"Of the total funds worth Rp30 billion, South Sulawesi will receive 10 percent to develop the seaweed industry in the province," Director General of Aquaculture in the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry Slamet Soebjakto stated in Makassar on Wednesday.

He noted that the funds for numerous districts and cities are intended to develop various means of production at the fisheries research centers and to assist seaweed farmers.

"The funds will also be used to cover the development of seaweed prime seed, aquaculture facilities, and seaweed cultivation technology," Soebjakto noted.

Although Sulawesi is the largest seaweed producing area in Indonesia, he expressed hope that the funds would be sufficient as there is still some budget to be provided by other ministries, including the local government.

"There are seven ministries, including the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, which support the development of the seaweed industry in numerous regions," he stated.
