REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, REMBANG -- Minister of State-owned Enterprises (BUMN) Rini M Soemarno asserted that the presence of industry, in particular state-owned enterprises has to have a positive impact on improving society's welfare and economy. "BUMN must be able to operate properly, obtain profit and also to improve society's welfare," she said during her visit to PT Semen Indonesia in Rembang district, Central Java province on Friday.

She was accompanied by the President Director of PT Semen Indonesia, Rizkan Chandra, during a meeting with community figures of the region. Other officials of state-owned enterprises, namely the President Director of Bank Mandiri Kartika Wirjoatmodjo and President Director of Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI), Achmad Baiquni, also attended the meeting.

Rini stated that society plays an important role in developing state-owned enterprises, including by reporting about something that needs to be improved. "I have heard that there were only two reservoirs here. Every sub-district should have a reservoir. Therefore, society should ask state-owned enterprises to build a reservoir in their area. Let me know if the reservoir has not been built."

She also reiterated her commitment that the presence of BUMN should be able to improve the community's economy. "I stand here to bring two president directors of Bank Mandiri and BNI. I would like to invite them to create a program of financing small and medium enterprises in order to give wider opportunities to local community in this village so that the community could develop a business," she noted.

She hoped that the banks' presence would help offer loan to small and medium entrepreneurs in order to improve their welfare. In addition, she encouraged residents living in five villages in the areas of ring I of PT Semen Indonesia in Rembang district to enter partnerships with other state-owned enterprises, such as with regional branch of the State Logistics Agency, which would require support from village heads. "Two-way communication should take place. The construction of a cement plant in Rembang district does not only to meet the country's interest, but also positively impacts the surrounding community," she stated.
