Indonesia becomes fifth largest country with diabetes

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA –- Diabetes is the most dreaded disease, because the sufferers could not be cured. Unfortunately, the number of diabetics in Indonesia are still high.

In 2014, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), Indonesia became the fifth largest country with diabetes in the world, about 9.1 million people. Even in Asia, Indonesia became the second largest number of diabetic country.

This number of sufferer was increased compared to previous years. In 2013, people with diabetes in Indonesia were about 8.5 million people and Indonesia was ranked 7th in the world. Meanwhile, in 2011, there were 7.2 million people and Indonesia was ranked 10th.

"The number of diabetics is increasing, but if we know the risk factors, the disease can be prevented," said Head of Nutrifood Research Center Division, Susana, in Awarding Nutrifood Research Grant, in Jakarta, Thursday (20/8).
